WHAT WE DO? We set up the dates for the blood drives with Inova Blood Donor Service, sometimes a year and a half in advance. We place announcements in the Church bulletin and Knights Newsletter about the upcoming drive. We coordinate with Inova during the last two or three weeks preceding a drive to get fliers and posters announcing the drive times and the points of contact. We call or personally speak with those who have donated with us before, our ‘regular donors’, to establish or confirm appointment times. We do our best to fit in new donors with the regulars. We place notices in the Church bulletin and Knights Newsletter trumpeting the success of each drive, the number of people who signed in and the number of units of blood drawn. We keep a spreadsheet with the donors, names and how they can be reached.
WHY WE DO IT? The two Knights (father and son) who presently coordinate the drives are themselves long time blood donors. They recognize that donating blood is a pro-life activity in perfect harmony with the Church and the Knights mission. There is no substitute for blood, blood saves lives, blood is always in short supply; what better reasons could there be for sponsoring a blood drive?
